Shenaaz JanMohamed

fOUNDING dIRECTOR OF QUEER cRESCENT

Listen Now

Shenaaz brings up an important point about her work existing at the intersections of her own struggle between bodily autonomy and state-violence.

How has the perversion of Muslim bodies perpetuate state-violence during the War on Terror? How has this perversion led to stripping the bodily autonomy and right to self of Muslims around the world?

Shenaaz’s Story Offers Lessons in:

  • Intersecting bodily autonomy, identity and personhood with security-state violence.

  • Creating community that holds together the self as a focus for existing with purposeful resistance.

  • Healing work within movement and organizing spaces that hold together both identity, cultural work, and self-awareness.

Shenaaz’s background as a therapist during the Muslim Ban led to the creation of Queer Crescent as a healing space that also commits to radical acts of cultural and movement work.

Why do you think it is important to have a therapist in the movement? What does Shenaaz’s background offer that fills a gap that we are seeing discussed as a common thread in the movement?

In honor of Shenaaz’s healing work, how would you set up a sustainable health network in your organization. What would this require? What is preventing this from happening?
